CBAM-Compliant Stainless Steel Imports

What is CBAM?

CBAM stands for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and is a regulation enacted by the European Union. Its objective is to create a level playing field between European manufacturers and producers located in third countries.

Since European companies already bear the costs associated with CO₂ emissions under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the CO₂ emissions embedded in certain imported products are now also to be taken into account. The product groups affected include, in particular, iron and steel products.

CBAM aims to prevent energy-intensive production from being relocated to countries with lower environmental standards, while simultaneously supporting the European Union’s climate goals.

What Impact Does CBAM Have on the Steel Trade?

CBAM makes the international steel trade significantly more transparent. Importers face additional obligations regarding the recording, reporting, and documentation of CO₂ emissions throughout the supply chain. Key impacts include:

Proof of CO₂ Emissions

For imported steel products, emissions data must be recorded and reported to the competent authorities. The quality and availability of this data are becoming increasingly important.

Higher Supply Chain Requirements

Importers must collaborate closely with manufacturers, inspection bodies, and suppliers to provide the necessary information. Transparent supply chains are becoming a critical success factor.

Sustainability as a Competitive Factor

Alongside quality, availability, and price, the CO₂ footprint of steel products will play an increasingly significant role in procurement decisions in the future.
